French Defense According to Moroni: A Classical Approach to the Steinitz Variation

Learn the French Defense with Practical Precision

The French Defense remains one of the most solid and strategically rich responses to 1.e4, offering Black excellent practical chances in complex middlegame positions. Our new course, developed by GM Luca Moroni and GM Pier Luigi Basso, presents a comprehensive repertoire based on the Classical Steinitz Variation (1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6). All the alternatives to 3.Nc3 will be covered in Part 2.

Why the Steinitz Variation?

When you play 1...e6, you'll face 3.Nc3 in approximately half your games. This course addresses that reality by building a complete, practical repertoire around the most frequent continuation. Rather than diving into ultra-theoretical variations that require extensive memorization, the authors focus on principled play that enhances your winning chances.

The course centers on the main line: 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 Nf6 4.e5 Nfd7 5.f4 c5 6.Nf3 Nc6 7.Be3 Be7, advocating for the practical 8...a6 followed by ...b5 instead of more theoretical alternatives.

A Practical Philosophy

GM Pier Luigi Basso emphasizes the course's practical orientation: the authors consistently choose moves that offer genuine winning chances over purely theoretical perfection. For example, after the critical position arising from 7.Be3, they recommend 7...Be7 followed by the natural development plan with ...a6, rather than the highly theoretical 7...cxd4 lines.

This approach reflects what Basso calls "100% French spirit" – practical, profound, and always fighting for victory. The repertoire avoids the tactical complications typical of the Winawer Variation, instead focusing on classical, positional understanding where strong players can gradually outplay their opponents.

Comprehensive Coverage

The course systematically addresses White's major options:

Each chapter provides clear strategic guidance while maintaining the flexibility that strong players need to adapt to different playing styles and tournament situations.

The complete package includes:

Learn from Proven Expertise

Both authors bring extensive tournament experience and teaching expertise to this project. GM Luca Moroni's deep understanding of French Defense structures combines with GM Pier Luigi Basso's renowned ability to present complex ideas clearly and practically.

The course represents a modern approach to classical chess education – providing the strategic depth that strong players require while maintaining the practical focus needed for tournament success.
