Pawns form the strategic backbone of every position. Where they stand decides which files open, which squares are strong, where the pieces belong, and which side of the board each player should play on. Handle them well and the pieces almost place themselves; handle them carelessly and no amount of piece activity will repair the damage. What the Course Trains
The material is built in four connected parts, each developed through carefully selected exercises:
Creating dynamic possibilities. How your own pawn moves improve your chances — gaining space, opening the position to increase the activity of your pieces, mobilising a pawn majority, and opening files so the rooks join the game. This is pawn play as a source of initiative.
Attacking the opponent's pawn formation. Every structure has a target. This part trains how to identify the weakness in the enemy pawns and how to strike at it — the pawn lever, the break, the pressure that turns a static structure into a liability.
Restricting the opponent's pawn formation. The other side of the coin, and a more subtle art: denying the opponent his own pawn breaks, fixing his structure, and leaving him without the freeing moves he needs. Here pawn play becomes prophylaxis.
Pawn play in the endgame. Where structure decides most directly of all — passed pawns, majorities, and the pawn decisions that separate a won ending from a drawn one.
Together they cover pawn play in full — from the pawns that create your chances, to the enemy pawns you attack and restrain, to the endings where structure has the final word.
