The Semi-Slav for Black — Top-Level Repertoire by GM Harshit Raja
When the strongest players in the world want a defense to 1.d4 that holds up under preparation, they keep returning to the Semi-Slav. Kramnik built much of his elite career around it, Anand leaned on it through a World Championship match, and Carlsen has reached for it across dozens of games. It has earned its reputation as one of the most reliable answers to the Queen's Gambit — solid enough to trust, yet rich enough to play for a win.
In his new course, GM Harshit Raja sets out to package that heritage into something you can keep for life: a complete, top-level repertoire built around 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nf3 Nf6 4.Nc3 e6. The goal he states from the start is a lifetime repertoire — one set of answers, studied once and trusted for the rest of your career, rather than a collection of lines you patch and replace season to season.
A repertoire with a clear philosophy
The course is organized around two deliberate strategic choices, and both carry historical weight. Against the most popular modern try, 5.Bg5, Raja recommends the Cambridge Springs variation — 5...Nbd7 6.e3 Qa5, with the thematic ...Bb4 to follow. Rather than absorbing pressure passively, Black turns the position around: the queen and bishop combine to pin the knight on c3, giving White concrete problems to solve from the very first phase of the game.
Against the historical main line 5.e3, the repertoire steers toward the ...a6 and ...c5 setup — the exact battleground from the Anand–Kramnik World Championship match. Raja's reasoning is refreshingly practical: he expects most opponents to keep reaching for the older 6.Bd3, so the course prioritizes the lines you are genuinely most likely to face, while still preparing you for the razor-sharp 10.e5 and the deeply theoretical 10.d5 that elite players favor. The aim throughout is a repertoire that is objectively sound and practically robust — equally suited to quicker time-control games and to long classical fights.

Building a full defensive setup
Players looking for repertoires against both main first moves will note that Harshit Raja has also authored a Black repertoire against 1.e4 — the Sicilian Paulsen for Black. It is a separate, standalone course rather than a connected volume, but the two together let you pair a trusted Semi-Slav against 1.d4 with a flexible Paulsen against 1.e4, both from the same author's hand.
The Semi-Slav has carried World Champions through their most important games. With this course, GM Harshit Raja gives you the full, study-ready version of that defense — start with Chapter 1 and build a repertoire you can rely on for the rest of your chess career.
