Classical theory treated an early rook-pawn move as a small concession — a tempo spent on nothing while the real pieces waited. The engine age has quietly overturned that verdict. Again and again, a flexible waiting move has proven worth more than a routine developing one, and today's practice is full of early …h6 and …a6 ideas an older generation would have dismissed as slow.
4…h6 in the Queen's Gambit Declined is a clean expression of that shift. After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 d5 4.Nc3 h6, Black spends a move to deny White the g5-square — and with it, the whole theoretical forest that grows around the Bg5 pin.

That is what the Modern Chess Autumn Challenge produces, and this database is the result of its first stage. When a player needs a win with the black pieces against 1.d4, the Modern Benoni has answered that call for the better part of a century. Tal, Fischer, Kasparov, Topalov — the names attached to it read like a roll call of champions who refused to settle for a draw.
What united them was not a taste for risk but an understanding of a bargain. Black hands White a broad pawn center and a space advantage, and takes in return active piece play, lasting pressure down the queenside, and counterplay in the center and on the kingside.
That bargain is the whole idea of the opening, and it is where this course takes its name. Counterplay Without Compromise describes a defense that concedes something real about the structure without ever conceding the initiative.

There is a particular satisfaction in playing your opponent's own setup back at them, a tempo up. Part 4 pushes that idea into lines where White takes up structures that usually belong to the defender, with the extra move already in hand.
Two examples run through the volume. One is the Pirc structure, where Black answers with ...g6, ...Bg7 and later ...e5. The other is the ...d5/...Nc6/...Bf5 treatment that Baadur Jobava has long recommended for Black — reached here after 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 Nc6 3.d4 Bf5, a Jobava London with colors reversed.
After 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 g6 3.Bg2 Bg7 4.O-O e5 5.d3, Stella observes that the position is almost a Reversed Pirc. Black is objectively fine, but the extra move changes the practical picture, and the authors have found fresh ideas to pose problems exactly where theory promises Black an easy life.

Every opening asks you to pay for something, and the Tarrasch Defense names its price out loud. In return for free development, active pieces and a clear plan, Black accepts a long-term structural weakness — most often the isolated pawn on d5.
