Usually, the choice of defence against the English opening largely depends on what we play with Black against 1.d4 and, to a smaller degree, against 1.Nf3 and 1.e4. For example, a QGD player will seriously consider answering 1.c4 with 1...e6, while a Slav/Caro Kann one is likely to respond with 1...c6, etc.
However, Black can use a completely different logic when approaching the question: ''What to play against 1.c4?" We can choose an independent system with black pieces, almost regardless of what our repertoire is against the other first moves. And, in that case, the most natural reply to 1.c4 is 1...e5

We are happy to introduce the newest opening project by GM Mihail Marin - Symmetrical English with 3.d4 - Complete Repertoire for White.
This huge database includes 28 theoretical chapters, a Memory Booster, and a Video Version with 4 hours running time. Additionally, at the end of the database, you will find 15 interactive test positions.
The starting position of the repertoire arises 1.c4 c5 2.Nf3 when White is planning to proceed with d2-d4 against every move.
Nevertheless, this repertoire can serve well as an Anti-Benoni system: 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 c5 3.Nf3. Therefore, the course will be very useful for 1.d4 players as well.

Welcome to the Symmetrical English Repertoire Against 1.c4. 1.c4 has gained a lot of popularity these days. It is catching up with moves like 1.d4 and 1.e4.1.c4 also provides many opportunities to transpose to other openings in 1.d4, for example, the Catalan Defence.
By playing the Symmetrical English starting with 1...c5 in response to 1.c4, we cut many of White's options to transpose to 1.d4 openings. Also, as you will witness, symmetrical English is a solid reply to 1.c4. While writing this repertoire and analyzing the lines in it, one of the author's main intentions was to recommend lines that are relatively fresh and has been tried in a few games rather than suggesting lines that have been played in hundreds and thousands of games and given in many books written on repertoires against the English opening.
By learning some new and rarely played lines, we also carry an element of surprise. Of course, it is not possible to find new lines everywhere, but whenever possible, GM Dhopade made sure he includes some fresh suggestions and recommendations.

Symmetrical English is one of the most strategic openings. In order to play with success, one needs a very good understanding of the typical positional ideas and pawn structures. There are no so many lines that require memorization. Therefore, this repertoire is very attractive for people who are tired of studying long computer preparations.
The current database consists of 3 sections - Typical Positions, Theory, and Test Section. In other words, you will find 16 must-know typical positions, 16 theoretical chapters, and 15 interactive test positions.

The Owen Defence is one of the most interesting and original among hyper-modern openings. It combines ideas from several different openings, such as the Queen's Indian, the Bogo-Indian, the Nimzo-Indian and the Dutch. Black completely refrains from occupying the centre with his pawns and controls it with his pieces from afar, frequently involving the f-pawn in the process.
This database aims to offer a complete Owen repertoire against 1.c4 that avoids transpositions to the Queen's Indian or other main openings.
The database consists of 24 theoretical chapters and 16 interactive test positions.

In the second database of his English series, GM Michael Roiz completes his repertoire after 1.c4 e5 2.g3. Contrary to Part 1, with rare exceptions, the current database features systems in which the play is more positional. Therefore, when studying this database, one should mostly concentrate on the understanding of the typical pawn structures and plans.
In what concerns the theory, true to his approach, GM Roiz always tries to come up with original and less explored concepts.

The English Opening has always been one of White's most fundamental choices. You will hardly find a top-level player who does not have this opening in his repertoire. Nowadays, in our computer-driven era, English Opening is getting even more popular. The reason is that it is by no means simple for the opponent to prepare against 1.c4. Since the pawn structure is very flexible, we have a wide range of options on every move. Therefore, in most of the lines, general understanding tends to be more important than knowledge of concrete lines.
One of the most critical responses to 1.c4 is 1...e5. Black immediately grabs space in the centre and obtains a Sicilian position with colours reversed. In this database, GM Roiz starts building a complete repertoire against 1...e5. His repertoire is based on 1.c4 e5 2.g3.
