GM Ioannis Papaioannou continues his acclaimed Strategy Wednesday series this August with a fundamental and highly practical topic — Space Advantage. This edition, Space Advantage - From the Opening to the Middlegame, is designed to help players master one of the most crucial strategic concepts in chess — understanding how to obtain, maintain, and convert space advantages throughout the game.
With his trademark structured and clear teaching style, GM Papaioannou will guide you through the key strategic concepts, plans, and piece coordination required to dominate both central and wing space. A special emphasis will be placed on understanding how space advantage strategies emerge from the opening and how to maintain this advantage during the transition to the middlegame.
You will see that space advantage strategies can appear across a wide range of openings, with the first two lectures examining central space control through carefully selected opening examples, while the final two lectures will focus on wing space expansion and its practical applications. Understanding these formations will significantly improve your ability to recognize and exploit space imbalances across your entire repertoire.
As in previous editions, the camp will take place over two Wednesdays — 13.08.2025 and 27.08.2025, with two sessions on each day. After each session, participants will receive 10 test positions designed to reinforce the key concepts from the lectures. The final PGN file will include all test positions with detailed solutions.
Strategy Wednesday is part of the Modern Chess Academy, which means that all Academy members receive free access to the live lectures and the complete digital product released afterward.
