GM Ioannis Papaioannou continues his acclaimed Strategy Wednesday series this July with a fundamental and highly practical topic — Color Complexes. This edition, Color Complexes - From the Opening to the Middlegame, is designed to help players master one of the most crucial strategic concepts in chess — understanding how to exploit and control specific color complexes throughout the game.
With his trademark structured and clear teaching style, GM Papaioannou will guide you through the key strategic concepts, plans, and piece coordination required to dominate both dark and light squares. A special emphasis will be placed on understanding how color complex strategies emerge from the opening and how to maintain this advantage during the transition to the middlegame.
You will see that color complex strategies can appear across a wide range of openings, with the first two lectures examining dark square strategy through carefully selected opening examples, while the final two lectures will focus on light square strategy and its practical applications. Understanding these formations will significantly improve your ability to recognize and exploit color weaknesses across your entire repertoire.
As in previous editions, the camp will take place over two Wednesdays — 23.07.2025 and 30.07.2025, with two sessions on each day. After each session, participants will receive 10 test positions designed to reinforce the key concepts from the lectures. The final PGN file will include all test positions with detailed solutions.
Strategy Wednesday is part of the Modern Chess Academy, which means that all Academy members receive free access to the live lectures and the complete digital product released afterward.
