Strategy Wednesday – November Focus: Typical Mistakes in Practical Endgames with GM Ioannis Papaioannou

GM Ioannis Papaioannou continues his acclaimed Strategy Wednesday series this November with a topic that directly addresses the phase of the game where most points are won and lost — Typical Mistakes in Practical Endgames. This edition is designed to help players identify, understand, and eliminate the common errors that turn winning endgames into draws and drawable positions into losses, while developing the practical skills and mental framework needed to navigate complex endgame decisions with confidence.

With his trademark structured and clear teaching style, GM Papaioannou will guide you through the most frequent conceptual errors, calculation mistakes, and psychological traps that occur in practical endgame play. A special emphasis will be placed on recognizing when to simplify versus when to maintain tension, understanding the critical difference between technically winning and practically winning positions, and developing the patience and precision required to convert advantages against resilient defense.

You will discover that endgame mistakes follow recognizable patterns across all types of positions, with the first two lectures examining typical errors in pawn endgames and minor piece endgames through instructive practical examples, while the final two lectures will focus on mistakes in rook endgames and complex multi-piece endings. Understanding these error patterns will dramatically improve your endgame technique and help you avoid the pitfalls that cost players countless half-points throughout their chess careers.

As in previous editions, the camp will take place over two Wednesdays — 19.11.2025 and 26.11.2025, with two sessions on each day. After each session, participants will receive 10 test positions designed to reinforce the key concepts from the lectures. The final PGN file will include all test positions with detailed solutions.

Strategy Wednesday is part of the Modern Chess Academy, which means that all Academy members receive free access to the live lectures and the complete digital product released afterward.
