GM Swapnil Dhopade leads the July 2026 edition of Tactical Thursday with a paired theme that addresses the hardest part of practical calculation — Strategic Calculation and Calculating Long Variations.
In this camp, the focus shifts to two skills that separate strong players from the rest but that most club players never train deliberately: the ability to calculate in positions where there is no forcing sequence to latch onto, and the ability to calculate long, branching variations accurately without losing the thread. These are not separate topics — strategic calculation is the harder art, and calculating long variations is where it is tested.
A central idea of this edition is that not all calculation is tactical. When there is a combination on the board, the moves announce themselves; the far greater challenge is calculation in quiet, strategic positions, where the candidate moves are not forcing and the evaluation at the end of a long line is a matter of judgment rather than mate or material. GM Dhopade will show how strong players approach these positions — choosing the right candidate moves when nothing is forced, calculating long lines to the point where a position can actually be judged, and trusting that judgment once they get there.
The second core theme of the camp is calculating long variations. This is the endurance skill behind deep calculation: the ability to follow a line many moves deep, to keep the branches organised, and to compare candidate lines without the position dissolving in your mind. Most long-calculation errors at the club level are not errors of the first move — they come from the line drifting, a branch being dropped, or the final position being misjudged. This camp trains exactly that capacity, with methods that strong players use to build it systematically.
GM Dhopade will demonstrate how strong players:
