Nimzowitsch Defence against 1.e4 (6h Running Time)

The starting position of the Nimzowitsch Defence arises after 1.e4 Nc6

Why play the Nimzowitsch Defence? There are three main ideas:

a) To provoke your opponent and try to lure them into unknown territory.

b) To increase the amount of time your opponent may end up preparing (Tony Miles once said that he liked to play it early in a tournament to get everyone wasting time preparing for it).

c) As a transpositional weapon into 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 whilst avoiding second move alternatives such as 2.f4, 2.Nc3, 2.d4 and  2.Bc4.

In this camp, I will be showing you how to play the Nimzowitsch Defence as a stand-alone weapon. The running order is as follows:

1) Against 2.Nf3 we'll look at a HIGH RISK way to unsettle White, which is probably just bad if you play it against a modern engine but could be a good choice if you are playing against someone who does not like complications.

2) Against 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3, I suggest 3...e6, which looks like a good and interesting line for Black and can also be used against 3.Nc3 in the French Defence (3.Nc3 Nc6).

3) With 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 Qxd5 we reach the 3.d4 line of the Scandinavian. This is quite a nice line for Black if he knows what he is doing, and will also be of value for players who like the Scandinavian.

4) Finally we will examine 2.d4 d5 3.e5, which is thought by some to be a problem for the Nimzowitsch Defence because Black has blocked his c-pawn. Yet unlike the French Defence his c8 bishop is free to come out and he can get a satisfactory game.
