Typical Ideas in Positions with IQP

We will start this camp by examining important pawn structures arising in the line 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c3 d5 4.exd5 Qxd5 5.d4 cxd4 6.cxd4 Nf6 7.Nc3 Qd8

In positions with an IQP, one of the most important factors is "tempi". Here, we have an excellent chance to take over the initiative since we are ahead in development. In this lesson, we will learn about typical ideas regardless of the opening line.

Positions with Closed Centre arising after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c3

In this lecture, we deal with the following pawn structures: 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c3 Nf6 4.Bd3 Nc6 (or 4...d6 5.Bc2 Be7 6.d4) 5.Bc2 d5 6.e5 Nd7 7.d4

This pawn structure often arises in the French Defence. By studying the typical ideas presented in this lecture, we will develop a good understanding of how to gain an advantage in this type of position.

The line with 3...d5 4.exd5 exd5

Beginning with this lecture, we are studying the theory of 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c3. In this lesson, we deal with 3...d5 4.exd5 exd5 5.d4, when the dominating strategic theme is playing against the IQP.

 The line with 3...d5 4.exd5 Qxd5

The line 3...d5 4.exd5 Qxd5 is one of Black's best ways to meet 3.c3. After 5.d4 Nf6 6.Na3!? we almost never play with an IQP. White's basic idea is to play Nb5, Nc4, or after 6...Nc6 the move 7.Be3.

3...Nf6 4.Bd3 - Rare Lines

From this lecture, GM Papaioannou starts dealing with the line 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c3 Nf6 4.Bd3

White's basic idea is to play Bc2, followed by d4. In the introduction to this lecture, Papaioannou states, "I began studying this rare move some time ago. It got my interest when I noticed that the recommendations in various repertoires for  Black were quite dubious! 4.Bd3 is quite an interesting line, but to play it successfully, we must seriously study it! In this lecture, we will analyse  Black's lesser options. However, studying them will be very useful since many of your opponents will go for these dubious lines!"

The starting position of this lecture arises after 4...d5 5.e5 Nfd7 6.Bc2

White is getting ready to proceed with d2-d4. In this lecture, Papaioannou examines the direct 6...d4 as well as 6...Nc6. In both cases, White has very good chances to fight for an advantage.

The final lecture is dedicated to 4...d5 5.e5 Nfd7 6.Bc2 c4 7.d4 cxd3 8.Bxd3

We get to the starting point of this line. Black has a very narrow path to equality. If he strays from it by playing natural-looking moves, White immediately gets the advantage!
