Q&A SESSION Closed
The November edition of Strategy Wednesday, led by GM Ioannis Papaioannou, is now available as a digital product! This course offers a comprehensive exploration of symmetrical positions, focusing on their strategic and dynamic subtleties.
Through 4 in-depth lectures, GM Papaioannou explains how to handle these unique positions across all phases of the game—opening, middlegame, and endgame. You’ll learn how to recognize key structures, exploit imbalances, and seize opportunities to gain the initiative.
What’s Included?
✅ 4 Video Lectures: Breaking down the nuances of symmetrical positions.
✅ PGN Files: Complete coverage of all examples and concepts discussed.
✅ 20 Test Positions: Reinforce your understanding through practical exercises.
Now, we shall provide a brief overview of each one of the lectures.
LECTURE 1 - OPEN E-FILE
This lecture focuses on connecting the themes of the opening, middlegame, and endgame, providing detailed explanations of key endgames with symmetrical pawn structures. The goal is to strengthen your understanding across all phases of the game. By tying strategic themes to specific openings, this session serves as a valuable addition to any opening repertoire.
In this lecture, we examine symmetrical structures with an open e-file, commonly arising in the following openings:
- Petrov Defence
- French Defence, Exchange Variation
- Ruy Lopez, Berlin Variation
Through this study, you'll gain practical insights into navigating these positions effectively.

LECTURE 2 - OPEN D-FILE
This lecture explores symmetrical positions with an open d-file, which can arise from a variety of openings. Examples include:
- Spanish or Italian lines where d4 and dxe5 are played
- The 1.e4 c6 2.Nf3 d5 3.d3 line against the Caro-Kann
- Anti-Grünfeld lines with e4 Nxc3 dxc3
- The Torre System against the King’s Indian
As with the previous lecture, this session highlights the connection between strategic themes and specific openings.
General Guidelines for Open d-file Structures
- In positions with e4/e5, it is advantageous for White to exchange the light-squared bishops.
- Similarly, Black benefits from exchanging the dark-squared bishops.
- The evaluation of these positions primarily depends on the activity of the pieces.
This lecture provides practical strategies and insights to help you navigate these symmetrical structures with confidence.

LECTURE 3 - OPEN E- AND C-FILES
This lecture focuses on symmetrical structures with open e- and c-files, which are not tied to specific openings. Such positions can arise, for example, from isolated queen's pawn (IQP) structures when an exchange on the blockading square d5 occurs, and Black recaptures with a pawn. Additionally, these structures may emerge from positions featuring hanging pawns.
The evaluation of these positions depends heavily on the activity of the pieces and the specific piece configurations on the board. For instance, the presence or absence of heavy pieces can significantly alter the assessment of the position.
Through carefully chosen examples, this session provides practical insights to help you master these complex and dynamic structures.

LECTURE 4 - OPEN D- AND C-FILES
This lecture examines symmetrical structures with open d- and c-files, which can arise from a variety of openings, including:
- Queen’s Gambit Accepted
- Queen’s Gambit Declined
- Catalan
- Nimzo-Indian Defence
- Grünfeld Defence
These structures typically occur when White plays d4 and c4, while Black responds with ...d5 and ...c5, leading to exchanges of the pawns on these files.
The key factors for evaluating these positions are piece activity and development. By analyzing practical examples, this lecture provides a clear understanding of the principles needed to handle such positions effectively.
