♟️ Modern Chess Academy — October 2026 Program

October brings a new direction and a connecting theme.

1️⃣ Strategy Wednesday — October Focus

Decision Making with Papaioannou — Part 1

👤 Coach: GM Ioannis Papaioannou 📅 Dates: 14.10.2026 & 21.10.2026 🔗 Event page: https://www.modern-chess.com/event/decision-making-with-papaioannou-part-1/82979/

A new direction in Strategy Wednesday, and the first instalment of a series that will run across the coming months. Most training teaches you what to know. Very little of it teaches you what to do with what you know when the clock is running, the position is unclear, and two reasonable moves point in opposite directions.

Over the series, GM Papaioannou will work through the whole decision-making process — static and dynamic factors, calculation, time management, and the psychology of the player on the other side of the board. Every player reaches a point where more knowledge stops producing better results; this is the training that addresses the choice itself.

2️⃣ Tactical Thursday — October Focus

Calculation under Pressure and Spotting Hidden Tactics

👤 Coach: GM Swapnil Dhopade 📅 Dates: 15.10.2026 & 22.10.2026 🔗 Event page: https://www.modern-chess.com/event/calculation-under-pressure-and-spotting-hidden-tactics/33012/

Two themes, and two different ways calculation fails. A position is not only a set of pieces — it is also a clock, a tournament situation, and a nervous system. The same player who finds a combination in training misses it with eight minutes left. The calculation did not get harder; the conditions did.

The second theme precedes calculation entirely: most missed tactics are never calculated at all, because they are never seen. The position looks quiet, nothing is obviously loose — and the opportunity passes unnoticed. This half trains perception before analysis.

3️⃣ Repertoire Builder — October Focus

French Defense for Black: Fundamental Structures in the Tarrasch Variation

👤 Coach: GM Grigor Grigorov 📅 Dates: 20.10.2026 & 27.10.2026 🔗 Event page: https://www.modern-chess.com/event/repertoire-builder-french-defense-for-black-fundamental-structures-in-the-tarrasch-variation/73045/

August covered the closed chain of the Advance. September took on the principled 3.Nc3. October turns to the move that avoids both: with 3.Nd2, White declines the theoretical debate entirely.

After 3...c5 4.exd5 exd5, and once White plays dxc5, the game reaches the structure that defines the variation — Black with an isolated queen's pawn on d5. A dynamic asset and a long-term weakness at once: open lines and attacking chances in the middlegame, a target the moment the queens leave. Knowing when to attack, when to push, and when to transform is the whole art.

4️⃣ Guided Practice — October Focus

Fundamental Pawn Structures — The Carlsbad

⭐ Why Modern Chess Academy

Most chess training is content consumption. The Academy is structure — the work is connected month to month, and every pillar reinforces the others. Live GM-led sessions every Wednesday and Thursday, weekly structured practice, modern opening updates, real game analysis, and a long-term repertoire-building project, all within one integrated system.

Improvement is cumulative. The Academy provides the structure that makes that accumulation possible.

This is not random content. This is chess training — the Modern Chess way.
