Material Is Not the Same as Winning

What This Course Covers
Converting an Advantage – Part 3 is built around four themes, each explored through its own block of carefully selected test positions:
Block 1: Different Constellations. Unbalanced material distributions — queen against two rooks, queen against three pieces, three pawns against a minor piece, two minor pieces against rook and pawns — are among the hardest positions to assess. This block provides practical guidelines for evaluating and playing these imbalances, and trains the choice between attacking with superior forces and simplifying into a clear endgame.
Block 2: Extra Pawn(s). Converting an extra pawn depends on how it arose. This block covers the three key scenarios: neutralising an opponent's sacrifice for the initiative without becoming passive, handling the change of character when you win a weak pawn in the middlegame, and using favourable material transformations — such as returning a pawn or sacrificing an exchange — to defuse counterplay.
Block 3: Endgame. In the endgame the king becomes a fighting piece and passed pawns grow in importance. This block applies the technical principles of conversion to endgame play, with an emphasis on concrete calculation — delivering the decisive blow, transposing into a winning pawn endgame, and recognising the opponent's defensive resources.
Block 4: Typical Mistakes. Even Super-GMs make suboptimal decisions in winning positions. This block examines the typical errors — failing to neutralise counterplay, missing defensive resources, incomplete endgame knowledge, and technical slips — so you can solve the exercises without falling prey to them.
The Baumegger Method
IM Siegfried Baumegger brings decades of practical and teaching experience to this course. His approach emphasises pattern recognition and transferable principles rather than rote memorisation. The course includes:
60 carefully selected test positions from master practice, detailed analytical solutions explaining both the concrete lines and the guiding strategy, and a clear structure of four themed blocks of 15 positions each, progressing from complex imbalances to extra pawns to endgame technique and the practical traps to avoid.
