When Flexibility Meets Precision – The Nimzo-Indian According to GM Michael Roiz
The Nimzo-Indian Defense has long been one of chess’s most flexible openings — not because it’s vague, but because of the richness of its strategic options.
In this new course, GM Michael Roiz, together with GM Grigor Grigorov and IM Siegfried Baumegger, demonstrates that true flexibility requires depth — the ability to select systems that fit your style while maintaining concrete control of the position.
This is not about learning multiple disconnected lines.
It’s about mastering a unified strategic framework, where Black dictates the character of the game through principled central play.
The Strategic Core
The repertoire revolves around two main responses:
-
Against 4.Qc2, the dynamic 4...c5 5.dxc5 O-O;
-
Against 4.e3, the classical 4...c5, leading to active counterplay.
In the Rubinstein system (4.e3), the authors recommend the flexible 5...O-O, provoking early central tension with ...c5 and ...d5. This approach often leaves White with an isolated pawn or compels early simplifications — positions where Black’s coordination outweighs the bishop pair.
After 4.Qc2 c5 5.dxc5 O-O 6.a3, the modern 6...Bxc5 leads to sound Queen’s Gambit Declined structures confirmed by recent high-level practice.
Against 6.Nf3, the move 6...Na6 maintains pressure on c4 and keeps all structural options open.
In the Rubinstein mainline (6.Nf3 d5 7.O-O dxc4 8.Bxc4), the lesser-known 8...Bd7 serves as a fresh, practical weapon that avoids heavy theory while retaining excellent strategic prospects.
Sidelines receive full attention too:
The Sämisch (5.a3) is met with 5...Bxc3+ 6.bxc3 b6, and 5.Nge2 with 5...d5, followed by setups with ...h6 to neutralize White’s initiative. Every system is covered in detail — there are no blind spots.
Course Structure and Features
To make the repertoire fully practical, the authors combine deep analysis with clear thematic explanations:
-
29 chapters covering all systems after 3...Bb4;
-
A Middlegame Understanding Section connecting theory to strategy;
-
20 test positions for practical reinforcement;
-
Memory Booster for long-term retention;
-
To-Go versions of each chapter for quick review;
-
5 hours and 47 minutes of detailed video lessons;
-
Typical pawn structures illustrated through model games;
This course continues the successful collaboration that began with French Defense – Exchange Variation and Sidelines, maintaining the same emphasis on practical understanding rather than memorization.
Who Should Study This Course
The repertoire avoids sharp, computer-dependent battles in favor of positions where plans, coordination, and structural awareness determine the outcome.
If you’ve struggled to maintain multiple Nimzo-Indian systems, or if you prefer clarity of plan over memorization, this course provides the roadmap.
Build your Nimzo-Indian repertoire — not through memorization, but through understanding the system behind every move.
