There comes a point in almost every endgame where the variations run dry. The pieces are few, the position is quiet, and no forcing sequence promises anything at all. For an inexperienced player this is where the trouble starts — the reflex is to keep calculating, to burn energy searching for a line that simply isn't there. For players like Capablanca or Petrosian, this is precisely where the game was decided.

The plan that cannot be stopped

Zlatanovic's argument is a pointed one. Modern training rewards calculation above nearly everything else; puzzles, calculation training and even engine work all sharpen that single weapon, and younger players lean on it because it is the one they have honed. But calculation only helps when there is something to calculate. In static positions, where the opponent has no active resources, the stronger side wins by thinking in schemes — regrouping patiently toward a setup that improves every piece and gradually leaves the opponent with nothing to do.

The most experienced players go one step further. They recognise these positions early and often steer the game into them deliberately, because calculation can be matched over the board, while understanding is far harder to imitate. Zlatanovic traces that understanding through the players who embodied it best, from Rubinstein and Capablanca to Nimzowitsch, Petrosian and Karpov.
