The 4.Nd3 Petroff: A Complete Repertoire for White

The Petroff Defence built its reputation on solidity. Black answers 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 with 2...Nf6, invites the symmetry, and heads for the well-charted lines where the pieces come off and the game settles toward a quiet, reliable draw. It is the opening you reach for when you want certainty against 1.e4. GM Mitrabha Guha's repertoire is built to take that certainty away.

After 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nf6 3.Nxe5 d6, the routine move is 4.Nf3, stepping back into theory a Petroff specialist knows well. Guha goes the other way with 4.Nd3. The knight retreats to an unusual square, keeps every piece on the board, and declines the simplifying trades the whole opening is designed to reach. What Black came for was a theoretical duel down familiar paths; what Black gets is a fresh middlegame with the character still undecided.

A Sideline With a Point

Guha presents 4.Nd3 it as a low-maintenance, risk-free system that most opponents will not have examined much — the kind of line a Petroff player rarely faces and rarely prepares for. The knight sits on d3 ready to reroute through f4 toward the d5-square, White keeps a small, durable pull without committing to sharp forcing theory, and the resulting positions reward understanding over memorized sequences.

The course still answers everything. Guha covers Black's dubious third-move alternatives to 3...d6, the aggressive main line where Black goes after the white queen, the solid ...c6 setups that fight for the d5-square, and the lines where Black retreats the knight and offers a queen trade — each mapped to its own chapter with the plans White needs in every structure.

The Critical Line

The sharpest battle runs 3...d6 4.Nd3 Nxe4 5.Qe2 Qe7 6.Nf4 Nc6 7.Nd5, where Black will counterattack the queen and White answers attack with attack. After 7...Nd4 8.Nxe7 Nxe2 9.Nd5 Nd4 10.d3, White invites 10...Nxc2+ 11.Kd1 Nxa1 12.dxe4, giving up the exchange on a simple point: the knight stranded on a1 will not escape. White rounds it up and emerges with the healthier position. It is a concrete, forcing sequence that repays study, and it sits at the heart of the repertoire.

3...d6 4.Nd3 Nxe4 5.Qe2 Qe7 6.Nf4

Completing the Picture

Because 4.Nd3 answers only 2...Nf6, it pairs naturally with a White solution to 2...Nc6. Guha's own Scotch Game — A Modern Repertoire for White fills exactly that gap, so the two together give a 1.e4 e5 player a fresh, low-theory answer to both of Black's main second moves.

If you play 1.e4 and are tired of steering into the Petroff's best-known drawing lines, 4.Nd3 is a practical, fully worked-out alternative that keeps the pieces on and the opponent guessing. Add it to your repertoire and start playing for more against the Petroff.
