The Fantasy Variation: A Fierce Weapon against the Caro-Kann
For a long time, 3.f3 against the Caro-Kann lived up to the faintly dismissive name it was given. The Fantasy Variation was treated as a club-level ambush — a line to spring on an unprepared opponent rather than a serious try for an opening advantage. That reputation is now out of date.
Modern engines evaluate many of the critical positions after 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.f3 as comfortable for White, and the move has crossed over from the world of surprise weapons into the repertoires of top grandmasters. What was once "fantasy" has become a grounded, objectively sound way to fight for the centre from the third move.
GM Baadur Jobava is a fitting author for this project. His instinct for original, initiative-driven chess sits naturally beside a variation built on early central tension and rapid development, and his reasoning runs through the whole course: consolidate the broad e4–d4 centre with c2-c3 first, then answer Black's counterplay with fast, forcing piece activity — 3.f3 treated as a principled struggle for the centre, not a tricky line.
What makes the course stand out is its completeness paired with a single clear plan against each of Black's tries. It covers the ...e5 mainline, the French-like ...e6 setups with all of Black's important follow-ups, the ...Nf6 development, the fighting ...g6, the immediate ...e5, and the provocative ...Qb6 — always with a concrete route to an initiative. A good emblem is the natural but already dubious 5...exd4?!, met by 6.Bc4! and a powerful attack.

A connected 1.e4 repertoire
Jobava recently completed a White repertoire against 1...e5, split across two separate courses — The Fried Liver Attack – Top-Level Repertoire for White and Evans Gambit for White – Top-Level Repertoire. They share the same initiative-first spirit: those two answer 1...e5, while this course answers the Caro-Kann.
If you are looking for a fresh, creative, and objectively correct answer to the Caro-Kann — one that turns a former sideline into a genuine weapon — The Fantasy Variation gives you exactly that, along with the practical tools to make it your own over the board.
