The Modern Archangel: A Plan-Based Repertoire Against the Ruy Lopez
The elite Ruy Lopez has narrowed to a few big lines. The Berlin Defence and the Marshall Attack carry most of the top-level traffic, both analyzed to the edge of exhaustion. GM Sina Movahed went looking for a road that sees far less of it but rewards the traveler just as richly — and found the Modern Archangel, the ...Bc5 system that Praggnanandhaa leaned on while climbing toward the world's elite.
The signature move is 4...Bc5. Instead of the automatic 4...Nf6, Black puts the bishop on its most active diagonal at once and stakes an early claim on the d4-square. The knight's route stays open — in this repertoire it heads to e7 and then g6, gravitating toward the f4- and h4-squares near White's king.
A repertoire built around a plan, not a memory test
White's classical recipe is c3 and d4, grabbing space and usually gaining a tempo on a bishop sitting on c5. Movahed's whole system is designed around that moment: the bishop steps back to a7, out of the pawn's reach but still aimed at White's kingside, while the knight completes its ...Nge7–g6 journey. The main tabiya arrives after 5.c3 Nge7 6.O-O Ng6 7.d4 Ba7.
When White forces matters with an early d4, after ...exd4 cxd4, Black has the handy in-between ...Bb4+ — provoking either a trade of dark-squared bishops or a knight block on c3, after which ...d5 opens up the center. Movahed covers both, plus the temporary pawn sacrifice White sometimes uses to keep the initiative. The positions are sound and double-edged, the kind where reading the plan matters more than recalling twenty moves of theory.
