The Positional Way against the Slav: A Complete Repertoire for White
Players reach for the Slav to put White to the test. The heavy main lines after 3.Nc3 when Black captures on c4, the Chebanenko with ...a6, the sharpest Semi-Slav tabiyas — each one asks White to remember a great deal of theory before the real game even starts. The Positional Way against the Slav sidesteps all of it.
GM Abdulla Gadimbayli, the 2022 World Junior Champion, meets 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 with 3.Nf3 and 4.g3 — a Catalan-flavoured fianchetto that moves the struggle off memorized lines and onto strategic ground. White develops naturally, places the bishop on g2, and keeps the structure flexible rather than forcing an early clash.
The idea behind the repertoire
The logic is consistent from move to move. Instead of trying to settle matters immediately, White builds the position step by step, pressurizes Black's centre, and steers toward a comfortable middlegame that is simply easier to handle in practice. The resulting positions are rich in strategic content, which is exactly where a positional player wants to fight the Slav.
Within that framework, Gadimbayli supplies fresh ideas at the critical junctions. Against 4...Bf5 — natural-looking, but it loosens b7 and concedes the bishop pair — he develops with 5.Nc3 and continues with 6.Nh4, and in the main 6...dxc4 7.Nxf5 exf5 line he steps off the standard 8.e3 with 8.Bh3!?, keeping a compensation-based path of his own. Against 4...Bg4, which he rates as Black's best try, he introduces an unusual idea that takes the game in a new direction and rounds off the repertoire.

A new direction for the author
Gadimbayli's most recent course was The Modern QGD with 4...h6 — A Fighting Repertoire for Black, a combative answer for the other side of the board. Here he switches colours and openings entirely, turning his positional understanding into a practical White weapon against one of Black's most reliable defences.
If you want a way of meeting the Slav that rewards understanding over memorization and leaves you with the more comfortable game, this repertoire gives you a clear, repeatable plan from the very first moves.
