The Queen's Indian Defence: A Complete Repertoire for Black by IM Deboushnik De
The Queen's Indian Defence is a classical opening, usually valued more for its solid positional foundation than for its fighting potential. IM Deboushnik De's new repertoire keeps that foundation but adds novelties, ambitious ideas and aggressive lines that let Black fight for the initiative.
The central idea goes back to Aron Nimzowitsch. His 4...Ba6, aimed straight at the c4-pawn, turns a developing move into a question White has to answer immediately. The repertoire is built around that question, and around a broader principle: Black's setup should be decided by what White has already committed to.
A Repertoire Built on White's Decisions
After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 b6 4.g3 Ba6, every way of defending c4 has a cost. Defending with b3 or Nbd2 leads to different development schemes. An early queen move can give Black chances to gain time.
Within the 4.Nc3 chapters, Black's dark-squared bishop may go to g7, d6, b4 or c5 depending on the centre and the available tempi. Against 4.a3, the repertoire claims d5 at once. After 4.Nc3 Bb7 5.a3, it prefers a flexible ...d6 with a potential kingside fianchetto.
Some lines become sharp early. Against 4.Nc3 Bb7 5.Bg5, Black chases the bishop with ...h6, ...g5 and ...Nh5 to win the bishop pair. After 4.a3 d5 5.Nc3 dxc4, White's Nxg5 strike opens the position around Black's king and calls for precise tactical play. Other chapters lead to strategic battles: active hanging pawns on c5 and d5, and doubled c-pawns as targets after ...Bxc3+.
The Author's Approach
IM Deboushnik De, a young Indian International Master with a strong focus on deep opening research, follows his Advance Caro-Kann course for White with a repertoire on the other side of the board. His aim is to combine fresh preparation and new ideas with a clear understanding of the positions that result.
The analysis repeatedly links moves to the reasons behind them: when to strike with ...d5 or ...c5, which bishop exchanges favour Black, and when activity justifies a structural concession. As the author puts it, the goal is to know what Black should be trying to achieve even after the game leaves the preparation.
