A game of plans, not variations
The Open Sicilian is a race of memory — the Sveshnikov, the Taimanov and the Najdorf are ground Black's specialists know well. GM Vladimir Malakhov spent most of his career declining that race. His answer to 2...Nc6 is 3.Bb5, the Rossolimo: White gives up the bishop to damage Black's pawn structure, and in return plays for plans rather than long forcing lines, with clear, durable trumps of his own.
The Rossolimo Revolution: A Powerful Sicilian Repertoire for White, by GM Vladimir Malakhov, GM Pier Luigi Basso and IM Dragos Ceres, is built on that idea and sharpens the old system with directions well off the beaten path.
The move that defines the course: 7.a4
In the main line — 3...g6 4.Bxc6 dxc6 5.d3 Bg7 6.h3 Nf6 — the authors reach for 7.a4!?. The logic is simple and permanent: either the pawn runs to a5 and fixes Black's queenside, or Black stops it with ...a5 and leaves b5 and b6 weak for the rest of the game. Everything else — Be3, Qc1, Bh6, the knight to c4 — comes only after that concession is forced, and the analysis shows how quickly an opponent who doesn't know the plan can drift into trouble.
The repertoire covers every Black third move, with the two main battlegrounds growing from the recapture on c6. After 4...dxc6 Black stays solid and takes the d-file, while White plays for the healthier pawns and the e5-square; after 4...bxc6 Black keeps a compact centre where Malakhov prefers the quiet 8.h3 to the analysed 8.d4. He has trusted the Rossolimo against 2...Nc6 for most of his career, and his first-person guidance is joined by Basso's and Ceres's analytical work.
