1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 3.Bg5 — Torre for White: Deep Understanding

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6, most White players face a choice they have made a hundred times: play 3.c4 and step into the vast, well-mapped territory of the Queen's Gambit and the Nimzo-Indian, where the opponent's preparation is usually waiting. This course is built on a different third move. With 3.Bg5 — the Torre Attack — White sets the strategic agenda at once, sidesteps the heavily prepared mainstream, and steers the game into positions where understanding decides far more than memorisation.

That is the appeal GM Ioannis Papaioannou builds the whole repertoire around. The 3.Bg5 system is one of the most flexible and ambitious choices available to White: principled, genuinely ambitious, and largely free of the forced sequences that dominate mainline 1.d4 practice. These are exactly the positions where strong preparation pays off — and where opponents armed with memorised theory often find themselves out of book by move six.

At the same time, the system demands a particular kind of preparation, because Black's principled tries lead to completely different types of position. The lines with ...d5 produce positional struggles where pawn structures and piece placement decide the game. The Hedgehog setups bring flexible, manoeuvring positions where both sides play for the long game. And the rare lines — including the direct ...Qb6, striking at b2 — invite sharper, more concrete play that must be met precisely.

That is why the course opens not with theory but with two full lessons on typical strategies and typical mistakes. Before a single variation is examined, Papaioannou establishes the recurring plans of the system and the errors that most often decide these positions — for both sides. Everything that follows rests on that foundation, which is what turns a flexible setup into a genuine winning attempt rather than a way of avoiding theory.

The thread connecting every lesson is the same one that runs through all of Papaioannou's work: when you understand the structures, the plans, and the psychological aspects of the game, you no longer depend on memorisation. You play with clarity and confidence, and you keep the initiative even in positions the engine calls level. The focus throughout is on the setups that arise again and again in practice, not the lines that appear once and vanish.

What you will master

What's inside

Built from GM Ioannis Papaioannou's camp on the 3.Bg5 system, the course brings the full material into a self-paced format:

The result is a complete, practical repertoire for White after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 e6 — one coherent system, grounded in understanding, that poses real problems from the very first moves and holds up in real games against real opponents.
