Most players who open 1.d4 accept an unspoken bargain: in exchange for a sound, ambitious first move, they agree to meet whatever their opponent has prepared — the Nimzo-Indian, the Grünfeld, the King's Indian, the Queen's Gambit Declined, each with its own library of theory. This course is built on refusing that bargain. With 2.Bg5, White sets the strategic agenda from the second move, sidesteps the heavily prepared mainstream defences, and steers the game into positions where understanding matters far more than memorisation.

That is the appeal GM Ioannis Papaioannou builds the whole repertoire around. The Trompowsky is one of the most flexible and ambitious choices available to White — principled and genuinely ambitious, yet largely free of the forced sequences that dominate mainline 1.d4 practice. What makes the system demanding is that it is not one opening but four. Black has several principled tries, and each leads to a completely different type of position. The 2...d5 lines produce positional struggles where pawn structures and piece placement decide the evaluation. The 2...e6 lines invite sharper, more concrete play. The 2...Ne4 lines are the most theoretical of all. And 2...c5 brings dynamic, imbalanced positions to the board. A single block of memorised theory was never going to cover them; what holds the repertoire together is a consistent way of thinking about each structure.
