Understanding the King's Indian: The Ideas That Outlive Theory
Zürich, 1953. At the Candidates Tournament where the King's Indian Defence was reborn, Svetozar Gligoric faced Alexander Kotov's Sämisch setup and gave up pawns to blockade White's centre.
The sacrifice opened the long diagonal for his g7 bishop and shut down White's bishop on d3. Within a few moves, White's pieces had been driven back to their starting squares. The game ended in a draw, but the idea has stayed relevant ever since.
For IM Filip Pancevski, it was the game that first taught him about the blockade. Decades later, he won a tournament game of his own with exactly the same idea. That connection between a classic idea and modern practice is what Understanding the King's Indian is built on.
A Course About Understanding
This course is not a repertoire of memorised lines. It deals with what decides King's Indian games long after the theory has run out: the plans, the typical exchanges, the pawn structures and the piece placements.
The material is taught through 51 annotated games. The classical foundation comes from Fischer, Kasparov, Gligorić and Bronstein. Modern practice is represented by King's Indian specialists such as Zdenko Kožul, Ilia Smirin, Teimour Radjabov, Hikaru Nakamura and Gawain Jones.
The Author's Approach
IM Filip Pancevski has played the King's Indian for two decades. The course includes nine of his own games, from the 2005 European U18 Championship to his recent tournament practice.
His aim is simple: by the end of the course, you should recognise these positions at the board and know what to do in them, rather than relying on memorisation. Each chapter isolates one recurring situation and shows how strong players handle it.
Ten Themes, Ten Chapters
Attack on the King – the Mar del Plata and other classical setups, with typical attacking plans and mating patterns → Chapter 1
Manoeuvring – improving the pieces, creating weaknesses, and knowing which piece to exchange → Chapter 2
Fast Development – punishing careless play, built around Letelier – Fischer (1960) and two Kasparov victories → Chapter 3
The Dark-Squared Bishop – when to keep the g7 bishop, when to exchange it, how to switch diagonals, and when it is worth sacrificing a pawn → Chapter 4
The "Weak" d6 Pawn – positions after ...exd4: White's space and pressure on d6 against Black's unbalanced counterplay → Chapter 5
The dxe5 Exchange – keeping the game dynamic when White simplifies, with or without queens → Chapter 6
The Blockade – from Kotov – Gligorić to the author's own win with the same idea → Chapter 7
Pawn Structures – how the structures change during the game, and where to put the pieces in each → Chapter 8
The Bxc5 Exchange – when White's Bxc5 frees the g7 bishop, and when it hands White a serious advantage → Chapter 9
Excluding a Piece – shutting a white piece out of play and converting that into a full point → Chapter 10

The Theoretical Companion
This course has a natural partner by the same author. In King's Indian Defense – Full Repertoire, IM Pancevski builds a complete theoretical repertoire for Black.
The repertoire tells you what to play. Understanding the King's Indian explains why it works and what to do once the lines end. Studied together, they cover both the theory and the middlegame understanding.
Start Your Study
Gligoric's blockade still works today because it rests on an understanding of the position, not on memorised moves. Open Understanding the King's Indian by IM Filip Pancevski and learn to play the King's Indian from its ideas.
