Ruy Lopez with 3...a6 and 4...Bc5 - Complete Repertoire for Black (Approx. 2h Running Time)

In the introduction to the current database, GM Mihail Marin writes: "When talking about developing the bishop on c5, the modern (or Modern Chess) reader may first think of the Neo-Arkhangelsk system, while I am still nostalgic about the classical Arkhangelsk. There is a third possibility, though: Black can deviate from these by developing his knight to e7. This has been first played in the '30s but started its modern trend with two games played by Mihail Rodin in the first decade of the third Millenium. One typical aspect is that in the beginning engines seem to be very critical about this setup, but after the game advances a bit they start approving Black's strategy. In principle, White can choose between lively piece play, with chances for both sides and the classical solid approach, leaving Black with a solid and flexible position, with good chances for reaching counterplay by manoeuvring accurately."

Philidor Defence - Play the Antoshin Variation

The Antoshin Variation of the Philidor Defense is a very interesting choice. Its theory is not very developed and easy to study. This is very practical if we compare it with other openings like the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defense or the Marshall Attack of the Ruy Lopez. In general, you can choose between a solid line and a more tense one. There are usually not many forced variations, and while often a large number of move options are available, many of them end up transposing to each other. Because of this, it is often beneficial to focus on studying the themes and manoeuvres typical for the variation. Black usually cedes the centre to his opponent, accepting a slight space disadvantage and playing for a counterattack. It is important not to miss the right moment to start this counterplay and end up in a passive position.

Complete Repertoire against Alekhine and Scandinavian

Zahar Efimenko prepared a database for White against the Alekhine Defence (1.e4 Nf6) and Scandinavian Defence (1.e4 d5). Both are relatively rare but quite provocative openings in the sense that Black lures White into pushing his central pawns in the opening, only to attack and undermine them later. Such an approach is often dangerous in shorter time controls as Black gives up some space in the centre and then tries to launch a counter-attack while waiting for White's mistake as he is defending his central pawns. Another similarity between the two is that in both cases Black puts a piece on d5 (a knight in the Alekhine and typically the queen in the Scandinavian Defence) as early as move 2. In some cases, there are even overlaps in the type of position that arises out of the opening, such as the Scandinavian gambit (2.exd5 Nf6) which can lead to an Alekhine-Defence type of position once Black recaptures on d5 with the knight. The database, which consists of 15 chapters and 15 test positions, can naturally be divided into two parts.

But, the next one took place only in 1983, and generally, this line was considered lame and never saw the spotlight until 2018-2019, where all the elite players suddenly picked it up! White is tempting Black to trade queens and go for the endgame. This endgame will be very similar to the Philidor endgame and to the Anti-Grunfeld one, but with some additional perks for White as ...c7-c6 proves a rather weakening move. ” This is a very compact and practical piece of research. The current database consists of 8 theoretical chapters, 2 model games and 8 test positions.

Sicilian Defence - Repertoire against White's Sidelines after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6

Zahar Efimenko is not only an extremely strong GM but also a famous coach and Vladimir Kramnik's former second. His theoretical research is known for its profoundness as well as the amplitude of fresh ideas. In his current database, which happens to be his second work for Modern Chess, he comes up with a solution to a very significant issue – how to meet the Anti-Sicilians? Any Najdorf, Dragon and whatnot player studies his favourite Open Sicilian variations and learns them by heart. But, what to do when it comes to the nasty 3.d4 cxd4 4.Qxd4 or 3.Bb5+? This is what this work is about. The current database consists of 12 theoretical chapters and 15 interactive test positions

Besides improving your play in the abovementioned theoretical lines, this material is designed to improve your general chess understanding as well. Hopefully, you will get a better feeling of the following strategical aspects: play with and against a bishop pair, find the right plan and execute the right pawn break in static structures, the importance of the space advantage, play positions with opposite castles. Additionally, I am sure that this database will help you to increase your endgame technique since I provide a number of instructive examples.

Ambitious Repertoire against the Caro-Kann

The so-called Advance Variation is White's most ambitious way to meet the Caro-Kann. The e5-pawn gives White a long-term space advantage and makes it difficult for Black to develop his kingside pieces. There are many possible setups and transpositions. Some of the lines are not concrete and you just need to know the typical plans and ideas. On the other hand, there are lines in which Black is trying to achieve immediate equality. In such lines, the play is getting pretty forced and concrete knowledge is required. GM Efimenko tried to make the repertoire as practical as possible. That is the reason why he provides you with a number of rare and almost unexplored lines and concepts.

Play the Open Spanish - Repertoire for Black

In this database, Mihail Marin provides a complete Black repertoire which is based on the so-called Open Spanish. The basic position of this line arises after the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.0-0 Nxe4 6.d4 b5 7.Bb3 d5 8.dxe5 Be6. In the introduction, GM Marin writes: "The Open (or Tarrasch) Variation in the Spanish Opening has fascinated me ever since the 1978 and 1981 Karpov-Kortschnoj matches, during which the challenger regularly used it, coming up with many new ideas. Before that, the system did not enjoy a good reputation, but the intense rehearsal during the matches provoked a real boom of the opening. For many years I had an intense but purely "platonic" sympathy for it. I finally decided to include it in my repertoire when I understood that playing the Sicilian against players like John Nunn was pure suicide. And as a reward, my first game with the Open Spanish ended in a draw against the same Dr Nunn, who one year earlier had made me the unwilling co-author of a brilliancy prize in the Najdorf! The aforementioned matches also induced a new fashion trend from White's point of view, but during the '80s, Kortschnoj introduced many new ideas in tournament games. Around 1990 a serious crisis happened, after a crucial loss of Kortschnoj to Hjartarson. I managed to play it for a few more years, switching systems when I feared concrete opponents' preparation, but around 1994 I had to resign to the evidence: Many of my favourite lines did not look playable anymore. Revisiting the variation after such a long time was refreshing. When writing this database I understood that at this stage of theory there are certain systems (mainly 9.Nbd2) in which Black has to go for dynamic play (and not for static positions, as I used to do)."

Play the Sicilian Four Knights

In this database, IM Robert Ris builds a complete repertoire for Black based on the Sicilian Four Knights. The starting position of this variation arises after 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 In this line, Black immediately puts pressure on the central squares e4 and d4. Additionally, he is planning to increase the pressure by playing ...Bb4 on the next move. This line is considered to be a very practical choice. Since Black is going for an active play at the very beginning, White's choice is limited. As a rule of thumb, by playing solid and natural moves, White does not get anything in this line. For a long period of time, the Sicilian Four Knights was considered to be slightly dubious. Nevertheless, the recent top-level and correspondence practice has proven otherwise. According to the analysis of IM Ris, currently, this variation is in a very good theoretical shape.

Anti-Sicilian - 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Qxd4

In his first opening database for Modern Chess, the Indian GM Sundar Shyam suggests a very interesting antidote to the Sicilian. After 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4, he goes for 4.Qxd4!? Of course, at first sight, this move seems a little bit strange. White starts playing with the queen as early as move 4. It turns out, however, that Black doesn't have an efficient way to make use of this concession. Moreover, with his last move, White creates the positional threat of c2-c4, obtaining the so-called Maroczy Bind or the Hedgehog.

The Scotch Game has recently gained popularity as many top-level players have used it frequently. One of the benefits of choosing this opening is that White is taking his opponent out from his comfort zone in Italian and Ruy Lopez. Complete Caro-Kann Repertoire for Black - Part 3

In the third part of his Caro-Kann trilogy, GM Firat covers the Panov Аttack, Exchange Variation and minor sidelines for White on moves 2 and 3. He remains true to his investigative approach, uncovering new ideas and reviving forgotten development systems in virtually every variation. He often seeks dynamic options, not shying away from material sacrifices to solve opening problems or even take over the initiative with Black early in the game. Some of his novelties will have an added surprise value, as the opponent has likely not analyzed them in depth, or at all. In more solid variations, he offers sound positional advice when necessary, such as which plans to follow, which pieces to exchange, and which move orders to go for and which to avoid.

Complete Najdorf Repertoire for Black - Part 3

The third and final database covers some of the most dangerous and topical systems against the Najdorf as well as all the sidelines. You will find a complete repertoire against the following moves: 6.h3, 6.Be3, 6.a3, 6.h4, 6.Bd3, 6.Nf3, 6.Qf3, 6.Qe2, and 6.Qd3. While 6.h3 and 6.Be3 are considered to be a mainstream theory, other moves are interesting sidelines. In the past few years, the approach in the opening has changed a little, and people are now looking to get a playable position with interesting possibilities instead of going for theoretical discussions and long forced lines (We may want to call it the "Magnus Carlsen" effect!). Due to this new approach, White players switched to less exploited fields in order to pose new problems for Black in the Najdorf. We will see that despite those lines not being concrete or so aggressive-looking as the ones analyzed in database 2, Black should be aware of them as to avoid getting into trouble. The database consists of 3 sections - Typical Pawn Structures, Theoretical Section and Test Section.

Complete Caro-Kann Repertoire for Black

In the second part of his Caro - Kann trilogy, GM Burak Firat deals with the Advanced Variation (1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5) Recently, this line became White's main weapon against the Caro - Kann. The main continuation 3...Bf5 is very complex and well analyzed. White has a variety of plans and Black needs to be well-prepared in all the lines. That's why in recent years the move 3...c5 becomes fashionable. Players like Mamedyarov, Anand, Grischuk, Nakamura try it with success. GM Firat decides to suggest 3...c5 as his main recommendation against the Advanced Variation and offers plenty of fresh and new ideas for Black.

Play the Classical Sicilian - Complete Repertoire

In Part 1 of his Sicilian repertoire, IM Ogulcan Kanmazalp was dealing with the position arising after the moves 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 Nc6 6.Bg5. Despite the fact that 6.Bg5 is by far the most critical continuation, White has decent alternatives. These alternatives are the topic of the current database. The author deals with 7 alternatives to the main move 6.Bg5 - 6.Nb3, 6.h3, 6.f4, 6.g3, 6.f3, 6.Be3, 6.Be2, and 6.Bc4. With the exception of 6.Bc4, these moves are more positional and less critical than 6.Bg5. In the arising positions, the knowledge of the typical plans and ideas is much more important than the memorization of concrete lines. The move 6.Bc4 is considerably sharper and requires a more concrete approach. As in the first database, IM Kanmazalp comes up with new ideas in all the lines. The survey consists of 12 theoretical chapters and 24 interactive test positions.

A simple check in the database is enough to see that over the years this line has been employed by the World's best players. That is why the player with a better understanding has good chances to outplay his opponent.

Opening Trends in Sicilian, Caro-Kann, Philidor, Scandinavian, Pirc, and Alekhine - Batumi Olympiad

The current database deals with all other Black's responses to 1.e4. As it was the case with the first part, the author goes through all the theoretically important games. Besides, making a short theoretical overview of each line and pointing out the novelties, the author often suggests improvements on his own. The database consists of 30 chapters which cover different theoretical lines. Such a format is ideal for those of you who want to follow the latest developments in their repertoire.

Complete Najdorf Repertoire for Black - Part 2

In Part 1, IM Renato Quintillano wrote a quick summary of Black's main ideas and goals in the Najdorf, explaining the reasons why he thinks it is the most reliable option for Black in the Sicilian. In that database, he dealt with the positional lines, in which White wants to keep the position under control and prevent Black from taking the initiative, playing for a small advantage and a strategic approach. Time has come now to deal with those uncompromising lines, in which White seeks a direct attack against the black king, initiating a bloody battle for the initiative. Here the game tends to develop in a very concrete way, and both sides need to search for tactical resources and attacking ideas, instead of strategic motifs and positional maneuvers, as in the first database. Some move orders and subtleties gain in importance now, and strong calculation skills are required.

French Defense - Play the Winawer against 3.Nc3  Updated

3.Nc3 is White's most active weapon against the French Defense. GM Marin provides an opening repertoire for Black based on 3...Bb4, commonly known as the Winawer Variation. While both 3...Bb4 and 3...Nf6 are principled as they attack White's center, the author has a clear preference for 3...Bb4 because it offers an early strategic plot, similar to his recommendation against 3.Nd2. The point is that in many lines of this variation, the exchange on c3 leads to strategically double-edged positions.

This very common opening approach is used by Magnus Carlsen with a great success. Renier is sharing his ideas in 12 chapters - eight of them are for Yates Variation, and four are for Anti - Marshall. Moscow Variation against the Sicilian - Complete Repertoire against 2...d6  Updated

Nowadays the Moscow variation is extremely popular, and one of the reasons is the current World Champion Magnus Carlsen. His approach to the chess has changed the way of thinking for many - not to strive for advantage in the opening, but get an easy play with a logical development of the pieces. Don't be mistaken though - Magnus Carlsen may play off-beat variations but he does know them really well. Right now pretty much all of the top level players who choose 1.e4 play a decent amount of the Moscow variation as well.

Reversed Sicilian - Avrukh's Antidote to 1.c4 (Part 2)

In the second part of his repertoire against 1.c4, GM Boris Avrukh deals with the systems based on 2.g3 and 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.g3 Against these two move orders, we cannot reach the Reversed Dragon with Bc5 which was discussed in Part 1. Of course, you can still play Reversed Dragon by employing the main line with Nb6. Nevertheless, Boris doesn't like the fact that White has too many possible options. As always, Avrukh chooses a very aggressive repertoire. Systems after 1.c4 e5 2.g3 c6 and 1.c4 e5 2.Nc3 Nf6 3.g3 Bb4 are positionally unbalanced and very complex. Avrukh did a fantastic job by providing the readers with a variety of novelties and sometimes even with new concepts of play.

Reversed Sicilian - Avrukh's Antidote to 1.c4 (Part 1)

Every chess player has faced the dilemma of how to meet the English opening. 1.c4 is objectively a weaker move than 1.e4 or 1.d4, but it is by far the trickiest option for White on move 1. With so many transpositions, different setups and move orders, White has plenty of options to turn the game into the desired setup. That’s why we are pleased to announce this database in which one of the top theoreticians in the world – GM Boris Avrukh, provides you with a complete, aggressive repertoire against 1.c4. Black has many choices after 1.c4, but the Reversed Sicilian (1…e5) is by far the most principled move. Hence it is no surprise that GM Avrukh decided to base his repertoire on it.

Many strong grandmasters have employed it regularly and achieved great success with it, Lajos Portisch, Ilya Smirin, Vadim Milov just to name a few. Not just that, champions like Carlsen and Kramnik have played it successfully as well. The main incentive to play the Sicilian Kan is to take your opponents into a battle where talent and creativity overweight memory.

Classical Anti - Scotch Repertoire

That is why the so-called Scotch Opening became highly popular even at top level. In the recent years, modern practice showed that the Scotch offers a variety of interesting and unexplored positions. That is the reason why among it's supporters we could find the names of creative top grandmasters like Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, Ian Nepomniatchi, Alexader Morozevich and of course the great Garry Kasparov. The current data is designed to provide the reader with a solid Anti-Scotch repertoire which can be used at any level.

The Steinitz Defense Deferred

The Steinitz Defence Deferred is an interesting and still relatively unexplored system against the Ruy Lopez (3.Bb5). Apparently passive, yet extremely solid and quite flexible, it has survived the test of time since the late 19th century. Chess greats like Janowski, Schlechter, Capablanca, Alekhine, Keres, Smyslov, etc. The aim of this opening survey is to provide you with an easily understandable and concrete Steinitz Defence Deferred (in further text SDD) opening repertoire against the Ruy Lopez. SDD is a relatively rare occurence on the top level, but this can be a blessing in disguise for a club or a casual tournament player. Many white players dismiss such opening variations as second-rate and pay less attention to them than to Breyers and Marshalls of the world, on which they are ready to spend countless hours of analysis. If your knowledge of SDD is solid and deep, while your opponent's is superficial and coupled with "today I play against that off-beat Ruy Lopez line" approach, guess who has the upper hand?

Positional Repertoire against the French  Updated

French Defence is a tough nut to crack. This opening has a reputation for being a very good counter-attacking weapon. It was used with success by almost all the great players at the past and nowadays. Since the arising middlegames are extremely complex, usually, all three results are possible. Above-mentioned considerations explain why the choice of weapon against the French Defence is so important when we play 1.e4. In the current database, IM Renier Castellanos suggests a positional repertoire against the French which is based on the so-called Tarrasch Variation.

Play the Berlin against Ruy Lopez - Part 2

As we have seen, if Black knows what he is doing in this endgame, it's extremely difficult for White to pose any problems. That's the reason why White started to look for some possible deviations from the Berlin Endgame. Despite the fact that such lines don't promise an advantage, the arising posиtions and structures are complex and tricky to handle. That's why Black should be very familiar with all the positional and tactical subtleties in order to avoid entering a difficult position.
