Najdorf the Scheveningen Way — Part 1

Deep Understanding — GM Ioannis Papaioannou

A new camp by the legendary Greek trainer — deep, practical, and built around one of the soundest structures in chess.

This camp continues GM Ioannis Papaioannou’s “Deep Understanding” series, and opens a new project: a complete Scheveningen repertoire for Black, reached through the Najdorf move order.

For decades the Scheveningen has been one of the most reliable and flexible ways to play the Sicilian. The small pawn centre on d6 and e6 is modest, solid and endlessly resourceful: Black develops without weaknesses, keeps every piece on a useful square, and waits for the moment to strike with ...b5, ...d5 or ...e5.

It has one well-known problem. After the direct 5...e6, White has 6.g4 — the Keres Attack — and an entire body of sharp theory that many Scheveningen players would rather not face.

This camp solves that problem with a move order. By playing 5...a6 first, Black reaches the same structures he wants without ever permitting the Keres. The game becomes a Scheveningen on Black’s terms.

What makes this camp different

Reaching the structure is only half the task. The Scheveningen is a positional system that must be played dynamically, and that balance is where most players go wrong.

Play too passively, and White’s space advantage grows into a bind. Strike too early, and the modest pawn centre collapses. Knowing when to wait and when to break is the whole art — and no amount of memorised theory supplies it.

That is why the camp opens with a full lecture on typical ideas and strategies before a single variation is examined. Everything that follows rests on that foundation.

✅ A complete Scheveningen repertoire, reached through the Najdorf move order

✅ No Keres Attack — the sharpest theory avoided by move order alone

✅ The plans and pawn breaks that decide these positions, for both sides

When you understand the structures, the typical manoeuvres and the timing of the breaks, you no longer depend on memorisation. You play with clarity and confidence, and you keep your options open even in positions the engine calls level.
