Deep Understanding — GM Ioannis Papaioannou
The second camp of the project: White's most aggressive answers to the Najdorf, met with the Scheveningen structure.
Part 1 laid the foundation. The move order 5...a6 took the Keres Attack out of the game, the opening lecture set out the typical ideas of the structure, and Black's answers to White's positional systems, 6.h3, 6.Be2 and the less common sixth moves, were built on them.
Part 2 completes the repertoire against the systems in which White does not manoeuvre but attacks: 6.Bg5, 6.Bc4 and the English Attack with Be3 and f3.
These are the lines in which the Scheveningen is tested most severely. White develops quickly, often castles on the opposite side, and aims to break through before Black's counterplay arrives. The small centre on d6 and e6 is solid, but here solidity alone is not enough.
In Part 1 the main danger was passivity: let White's space grow, and the position slowly turns into a bind. In Part 2 the danger is time. Black's counterplay with ...b5, and the central breaks ...d5 and ...e5, must come at exactly the right moment, and the defensive resources must be known precisely, because in these positions a single tempo can decide the game.
This is where memorised theory fails most often. A player who knows the moves but not the reasons is lost the moment White deviates. GM Papaioannou explains why each move is played, what each side is aiming for, and how to recognise the moment when the position changes character.
