GM Grigor Grigorov launches a new long-term training concept in August 2026 — Repertoire Builder: French Defense for Black – Fundamental Structures after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5.
This camp marks the starting point of a six-month Opening Builder journey, designed for players who want to build a real, durable repertoire — not a collection of memorized lines. The focus is on understanding structures, plans, and decision-making from the very first move.
August 2026 – Fundamental Structures after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5
We begin with the structure that defines the opening. The Advance Variation produces the archetypal French pawn chain — d4 and e5 against d5 and e6 — and almost every strategic idea in the French can be traced back to it: the ...c5 break against the base of the chain, the pressure on d4 with ...Qb6 and ...Nc6, the fight for the c-file, and the long-standing question of the light-squared bishop.
Theory is kept intentionally light — only what is required to reach the right kinds of middlegame positions. The emphasis is not on memorizing sequences, but on understanding what ideas work, what each side is playing for, and how plans emerge naturally from structure.
A central idea of Opening Builder is that openings are not an isolated phase. They are a gateway to the middlegame. By focusing on fundamental structures from the very start, you learn to enter the middlegame with clarity, confidence, and a clear sense of direction.
This training is ideal for players who want a strategic, resilient Black repertoire against 1.e4 that remains relevant regardless of theoretical fashion.
The Six-Month Opening Builder Structure
August Fundamental Structures after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 The closed French pawn chain — the ...c5 break, pressure on d4, and the light-squared bishop.
September Fundamental Structures after 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 The Classical and Steinitz structures, where White closes the centre with e5 and both sides play on the wings.
October Fundamental Structures in the Winawer – 3.Nc3 Bb4 Dark-square strategy, the doubled c-pawns, and the imbalances that make the Winawer one of the richest structures in chess.
November Fundamental Structures against the Tarrasch, the Exchange and the sidelines Isolated and hanging pawn positions, symmetrical structures, and the practical setups Black meets when White declines the main battlegrounds.
