GM Ioannis Papaioannou returns in March 2026 with a theme that represents one of the most refined and powerful tools in high-level chess — The Art of the Positional Sacrifice.
In this edition of Strategy Wednesday, the focus shifts to one of the most sophisticated forms of imbalance in chess: sacrificing material not for immediate tactics, but for long-term positional domination. Unlike speculative sacrifices aimed at direct attack, positional sacrifices are rooted in deep understanding — control of key squares, superior structure, long-term initiative, and piece coordination.
GM Papaioannou will guide you through the logic behind these decisions. Why do strong players give up material without a forced win? How do they evaluate compensation? And how do they convert subtle advantages that arise from such decisions?
A central idea of this camp is learning to recognise compensation before it becomes visible on the surface. Many players hesitate to sacrifice material unless they see a concrete tactical sequence. This training addresses that limitation directly, showing how long-term factors — structure, weak squares, initiative, and piece harmony — often outweigh material count.
Throughout the camp, GM Papaioannou will demonstrate how positional sacrifices transform the nature of the position. You will see how they restrict the opponent, create lasting pressure, provoke weaknesses, and lead to technically winning endgames.
Throughout the camp, GM Papaioannou will show you:
• When a positional sacrifice is objectively justified
• How to evaluate long-term compensation
• Typical exchange sacrifices for control of key squares
• Pawn sacrifices for initiative and space
• How to convert positional compensation into concrete advantage
This training will not only expand your strategic vision — it will fundamentally improve your decision-making in complex middlegame positions.
Strategy Wednesday will take place over two Wednesdays — 18.03.2026 and 25.03.2026 — with two sessions per day. After each training day, participants will receive 10 test positions designed to reinforce the concepts introduced during the lectures. All positions will be included with solutions in the final PGN file.
All sessions are part of the Modern Chess Academy, meaning Academy members receive free access to the live lectures and to the complete digital product released afterward.
