Calculation in Attack and Defense
This February, GM Davorin Kuljasevic continues his Tactical Thursday series with a deep dive into one of the most crucial aspects of practical chess—Calculation in Attack and Defense. These sessions will focus on the key principles that guide accurate calculation when launching an attack and when defending against threats.
While both attacking and defensive calculations follow structured thinking, the mindset and priorities differ significantly. GM Kuljasevic will break down how to think in attacking vs. defensive positions, helping you refine your decision-making process and improve your ability to find the strongest moves under pressure.
Throughout these sessions, participants will apply and reinforce the fundamental calculation concepts learned in previous editions, including Ply Theory, Candidate Moves, Prophylactic Thinking, and Visualization. By integrating these tools, players will learn to approach complex positions with greater clarity and confidence.
As always, the lectures will be held over two Thursdays, with two sessions each day. At the end of each session, participants will receive 10 test positions to solve independently, reinforcing the concepts covered. The final PGN file will include all test positions with detailed solutions, providing a comprehensive study resource.
Tactical Thursday is part of the Modern Chess Academy, granting all academy members free access to these lectures and the corresponding digital product to be released afterward.
