1.Nf3 d5 2.b3 — Repertoire for White

Most White players who begin 1.Nf3 d5 reach for one of two well-trodden roads: 2.g3, the classical Réti, or 2.c4, transposing into English territory. This course is built on a third path. With 2.b3, White keeps all the flexibility of the Réti structure while stepping around the most heavily analysed theory — placing the dark-squared bishop on the long a1–h8 diagonal, pressing on Black's centre, and supporting a wide range of plans that opponents are rarely prepared to meet.

That is the appeal GM Ioannis Papaioannou builds the whole repertoire around. The system is principled and ambitious, yet largely free of the forced lines that dominate mainline Réti practice. It is preparation that works in real games — and precisely because it sits off the main roads, it is preparation the opponent has usually never studied.
