A Fresh Answer to the Réti: 2...Nd7 for Black
When GM Valery Kazakouski and GM Pier Luigi Basso sat down to prepare a repertoire against 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3, they didn't reach for the well-trodden paths. Instead of guiding Black through the analyzed-to-death 2...Nf6 or 2...Bf5 systems, they chose a different route entirely: 2...Nd7.
The move looks counterintuitive at first glance—the knight blocks the c8-bishop and stands on the queen's line. But the logic is concrete. Black prepares ...e5 immediately, and after 3.d4, the knight moves to the ideal b6-square, where it defends d5 and frees the bishop to develop to f5 without tactical concerns.
Why This Course Stands Apart
The standard responses to 2.g3 leave Black fighting for equality against prepared opponents. Kazakouski and Basso offer something else: a system built around central control and piece activity rather than reactive defense.
The 2...Nd7 move order leads to fresh positions where Black's plans—often revolving around the ...e5 pawn break or a Grünfeld-style setup with ...g6 and ...Bg7—give White real problems to solve. The course doesn't just present moves; it explains the strategic logic behind each choice, showing how Black's slightly unusual development translates into practical compensation and long-term chances.
This collaboration follows the authors' previous work on 1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 Bf5 - Practical Setup for Black, where they demonstrated how offbeat systems can thrive when supported by precise analysis. Here, the same attention to detail applies to every White try after 2.g3, from the immediate 3.c4 to the patient fianchetto setups and the prophylactic 4.a4 lines.
Variation Map
The course divides White's responses into nine chapters, each addressing a specific setup:
After 1.Nf3 d5 2.g3 Nd7:
- 3.c4 dxc4 4.Qa4 → Chapter 1: The pawn grab. Black plays 4...a6 5.Qxc4 b5 6.Qc2 Bb7, developing with tempo and reaching a comfortable position.
- 3.Bg2 e5 (The Fianchetto Complex):
- 5.d4 / 5.c4 → Chapter 2: Direct central breaks. Black maintains the c6-d5-e5 structure.
- 5.d3 c6 6.c4 / 6.e4 → Chapter 3: Active central play by White.
- 5.d3 c6 6.Nbd2 / 6.Nc3 → Chapter 4: Positional approaches.
- 3.d4 Nb6:
- 4.Bg2 Bf5 5.Nh4 → Chapter 6: The aggressive bishop chase.
- 4.Bg2 Bf5 5.O-O followed by 6.Ne5 → Chapter 7: Critical line coverage.
- 4.Nbd2 / 4.b3 → Chapter 8: Flexible systems keeping c4 and e4 in reserve.
- 4.a4 a5 → Chapter 9: Prophylactic queenside expansion; the a4-a5 inclusion favors Black.
- 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.Bg2 g6 6.O-O Bg7 7.Re1 Ne4 → Chapter 5: The signature Grünfeld-style setup, where ...Ne4 prevents White's e4 break and secures balanced, strategically rich play.
