Schematic Thinking in the Middlegame by IM Boroljub Zlatanovic
Every strong player knows the feeling: a comfortable middlegame, no forcing lines anywhere in sight, and yet the clock keeps ticking while you try to calculate something — anything. Yet very often — more often than you might think — middlegame positions contain nothing to calculate at all. The reflex to calculate regardless is precisely what lands talented players in trouble.
This course is built around that reversal. Where preparation ends and no concrete lines exist, the decisive skill is recognition — setting the position beside the many you already carry in memory, and recalling the plan rather than creating it.
Recognition instead of calculation
Zlatanovic's argument is a practical one. An experienced player detects almost instantly whether a position calls for calculation; when it doesn't, he leans on stored patterns and long-term schemes rather than spending time and energy on lines that lead nowhere.
Schematic thinking, in his framing, is a general-purpose tool. He shows how to use it to evaluate a position, to build a plan the opponent cannot easily disrupt, to resolve exchange decisions, and to anticipate the endgame a position is quietly drifting toward.
A weapon against impatient play
The method is aimed directly at a generation raised on tactics and constant calculation. Steer a game toward a quiet, static structure in your favor, and impatient opponents tend to manufacture activity that isn't there — often a weakening pawn move that hands you a lasting target.
The balanced player defends when defense is called for and attacks when the moment genuinely arrives. In between, he simply improves his pieces through maneuvering and good exchanges — an area where new-generation games most often fall short. "Let experience make the winner" is the thread running through the course.
