The Bogo-Indian with ...a5: A Dynamic Repertoire for Black

After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4+ 4.Bd2, Black faces the Bogo-Indian's oldest question: what to do about the bishop on b4. Trade it, defend it with the queen, or strike with ...c5?

GM Jose Martinez Alcantara chooses a fourth path. The modest rook-pawn move 4...a5!? anchors the bishop, keeps the tension, and prepares the classic Bogo-Indian setup with the d6–e5 pawn chain.

Why ...a5?

The author's goal is simple: fighting positions in which Black dictates the character of the game. After 3.Nf3, the Bogo-Indian denies White the familiar Catalan structures and steers the game toward a different kind of struggle.

The ...a5 move does more than defend b4. In many lines the pawn moves on to a4, squeezing the queenside and making it harder for White to make progress on that side of the board. Against 5.Bxb4 axb4, the structural transformation keeps Black's chances to play for all three results.

Variation Map

The main battleground arises after 5.g3, White's most popular reply, where Black builds ...d6, ...Nbd7 and ...e5. Against the solid 5.a3, the author goes into fresh territory with 8...Qe7!?, a move with only a few games in the Mega Database. The idea is to prepare ...e5 and avoid any queen exchange, so the position stays complex.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4+ 4.Bd2 a5

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 e6 3.Nf3 Bb4+ 4.Nbd2 a5

Against 4.Nbd2, Black stays loyal to the same plan. The author believes the knight on d2 is often poorly placed, and against 5.e3 Black gets an excellent version of the QGD structure with 5...d5!.

Building a Complete Answer to 1.d4

The Bogo-Indian handles the 3.Nf3 move order, so it pairs naturally with a Nimzo-Indian against 3.Nc3. The author has already built that half of the repertoire with GM Pier Luigi Basso in Nimzo-Indian Defense According to Jospem. It is a practical Black repertoire that puts understanding ahead of memorization.

Readers who know the author's earlier Bogo-Indian Defense According to Jospem will find a different weapon here. That course is built on 4...c5 after 4.Bd2. The new ...a5 repertoire offers a second, independent way to meet the same position.

Start Playing ...a5

If you want an active Bogo-Indian that leads to fresh, double-edged positions, GM Martinez Alcantara's repertoire is ready for your next game. Get The Bogo-Indian with ...a5: A Dynamic Repertoire for Black and start meeting 4.Bd2 and 4.Nbd2 with a plan of your own.
