The Complete Nimzo-Indian Repertoire for Black by GM Mitrabha Guha

Reykjavik, 1972, Game 5. Boris Spassky plays the Nimzo-Indian's most popular system, and Bobby Fischer answers with an idea that looks almost careless: he captures on c3 without waiting for a3, voluntarily giving up the bishop pair. Then comes the point — ...d6, ...e5, and a blockade that slowly suffocates White's position. Twenty-seven moves later, Spassky resigns.

That blockading concept, refined by GM Robert Hübner in the late 1960s and 1970s, is the foundation of GM Mitrabha Guha's new course. Against the Rubinstein System with 4.e3 — by far White's most popular reply — Guha recommends exactly the Hübner treatment: 4...c5 followed by an early exchange on c3 and the strategic clamp with ...d6 and ...e5. It is a repertoire built on plans, not on memorizing long lines of theory.

A Repertoire in the Champions' Tradition

The Nimzo-Indian hardly needs an introduction. As Guha notes in his opening chapter, it has been trusted for over a century by Capablanca, Botvinnik, Karpov, Kasparov, Anand, Kramnik, Carlsen, Caruana, and Nakamura — proof of a rare combination: complete theoretical soundness paired with genuine winning chances. Black fights for the center from move three, creates long-term structural pressure, and reaches middlegames rich in both strategic and tactical content.

What distinguishes Guha's approach is his consistent focus on understanding over memorization — the same philosophy behind his earlier Modern Chess work. Each of White's systems is explained through its historical roots and its underlying logic.

You meet the Kasparov Variation 4.Nf3, which Kasparov wielded in his 1985 World Championship match against Karpov; the Sämisch 4.a3, where White accepts doubled c-pawns for the bishop pair; and the Classical 4.Qc2, revived in the 1990s after decades in the Rubinstein's shadow.

Against the Classical, Guha relies on the Pirc Variation with 4...c5 5.dxc5 O-O — the very setup that once made 4.Qc2 unpopular, and one that modern theory still regards as fully reliable.

Premium Course Features

This is a Modern Chess Premium course, built as a complete training system:

Completing the Picture Against 1.d4

The Nimzo-Indian arises when White plays 3.Nc3. Against 3.Nf3, sidestepping the pin altogether, Black needs a different weapon — and one natural option is the Queen's Indian, which Guha has covered in his Queen's Indian Defense for Black. Players who take up both courses will meet 1.d4 and 2.c4 with the same author's ideas, whichever knight White develops on move three.

If you want an opening that has never been refuted, that every World Champion of the last hundred years has trusted, and that rewards understanding rather than pure memorization, GM Guha's Complete Nimzo-Indian Repertoire gives you the plans, the structures, and the training tools to make it your own.
