The Paulsen Sicilian for White: Taking Control with 5.Bd3

A Modern Answer to an Ambitious Defense

The Paulsen Sicilian has long been a weapon of choice for players who want to outplay their opponents from a position of strategic complexity. Black's setup with ...a6 and ...e6 is deceptively flexible — it avoids early commitments while preparing a rich middlegame where initiative often shifts gradually. For decades, White's responses were either sharp and double-edged or solid but uninspiring. GM Jose Martinez Alcantara and IM Dragos Ceres propose something different: 5.Bd3, a move that is flexible, concrete, and immediately sets the terms of the game.

The leitmotif of this course is a simple but provocative idea — that the Paulsen is not a problem to be neutralized, but a structure to be controlled. Where classical theory often allowed Black to dictate the tempo, 5.Bd3 shifts the dynamic. White develops with purpose, avoids well-trodden theoretical labyrinths, and retains genuine winning chances from the very first moves.

What the Course Covers

The repertoire is built around a clear conceptual framework. After 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 e6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 a6 5.Bd3, White is ready to meet every practical try Black has — from the modern main line with 5...Bc5 to the classical 5...Nf6, the fianchetto with 5...g6, and the rare but dangerous 5...Ba7 (recommended in "Paulsen for Black" by GM Luca Moroni and addressed directly in Chapter 7). Against 5...Nf6, the course introduces 6.0-0 Qc7 7.Qe2 with the option of transitioning into a Maroczy Bind structure via c2-c4 — an environment where Black's counterplay is notoriously difficult to generate. Against 5...Bc5, play flows into 6.Nb3 Be7 7.Qg4, placing immediate and concrete pressure on g7 before Black can consolidate.

The Authors and Their Approach

GM Jose Martinez Alcantara and IM Dragos Ceres are no strangers to building complete, high-level White repertoires against the Sicilian. Their previous collaborations — Sicilian Taimanov: Elite Repertoire for White and Najdorf for White: Top-Level Repertoire — have established their approach: deep preparation delivered through clear, practical frameworks that hold up under pressure. The Paulsen Sicilian for White completes a significant part of their Sicilian for White project, giving players a unified, coherent answer to the 1...c5 complex. Each line is presented with the kind of precision that comes from understanding not just what the best move is, but why it works and when it matters.

Course Features

If you've been looking for a structured, theoretically sound answer to the Paulsen Sicilian — one that puts you in control from move five — this course is exactly that.
