Universal Solution against Philidor, Modern, and Pirc

A Practical Repertoire against the Gruenfeld

Preparing against the Grunfeld normally means preparing against several different lines at once. Black's pressure on the white centre can arrive from ...Na5, ...b6, ...Qc7, ...e6, ...Bd7 or ...Bg4, and the standard solution is a separate scheme for each — one more plan to hold in your head at the board.
A Practical Repertoire against the Grunfeld by GM Valery Kazakouski and GM Pier Luigi Basso is built on the opposite principle. After 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nxc3 6.bxc3 Bg7, the authors recommend 7.Bc4, and from there a single aggressive blueprint runs through every line: Ne2, castle, Be3, Rb1, and the f4-f5 pawn storm. Ten chapters, one huge centre, and the same set of ideas in each of them.

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nbd2 - Deep Understanding

GM Ioannis Papaioannou presents a complete White repertoire after 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3, built around the flexible 3.Nbd2 system that bypasses the King's Indian and Grünfeld theoretical battlefronts in favor of strategically rich positions where understanding outweighs memorization. Across seven lessons the course covers Black's full range of responses — 3...d5 with both quiet and ...c5-based setups, ...d6 structures with both Bb5+ and Bd3 plans, the energetic 3.Nc3 against 2...d6 leading to Pirc and Philidor positions, and the gambit 4.e4 against 2...c5 3.d5 b5. The course is the digital release of Papaioannou's training camp, featuring 10.5 hours of professionally edited video lectures, the complete annotated PGN material with additional analysis, and lifetime access — built for serious players who want a unified strategic system instead of separate preparation against each Black defense.

1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nbd2 - According to Felix Blohberger

When GM Felix Blohberger began searching for a practical weapon against the Grünfeld and King's Indian Defense, he wasn't looking to compete with mainline theory. Instead, he identified a subtle move order shift that changes the entire character of the position: 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6 3.Nbd2. By developing the knight to d2 rather than c3, White sidesteps decades of established theory while maintaining concrete advantages in the resulting structures.

1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.f3 - Top-Level Repertoire for White

When top players like Anand began employing 3.f3 against the Grünfeld and King's Indian, they weren't searching for a tactical refutation. They were reclaiming White's most fundamental asset: the ability to establish a classical pawn center without committing to a rigid piece configuration. This flexible approach, systematically explored by IM Kushager Krishnater, offers White a coherent repertoire where strategic clarity replaces the encyclopedic memorization demanded by mainline theory.

Anti-Grunfeld for Black

When White avoids the main theoretical battles of the Grunfeld Defense with moves like 1.d4 Nf6 2.Nf3 g6, many players find themselves unprepared for the resulting positions. The new Anti-Grunfeld for Black course by GM Luca Moroni, GM Baadur Jobava, and IM Dragos Ceres addresses this critical gap in opening preparation, offering a practical and universal approach that serves both Grunfeld and King's Indian Defense players.

1.d4 According to Lucas Van Foreest - 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.h4

When GM Veselin Topalov unleashed 3.h4 against GM Anish Giri at the 2016 Candidates Tournament, the chess world laughed. Critics dismissed it as desperation, a novelty without substance. They were spectacularly wrong.
Fast-forward to 2025, and this "crazy" move has become a weapon of choice for the world's elite: Magnus Carlsen, Ding Liren, Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, and Alexander Grischuk have all embraced what chess insiders now call the 1.d4 Squeeze Repertoire. The system officially entered top-level preparation between 2019-2020, transforming from curiosity to cutting-edge theory.
Modern Chess is proud to present "1.d4 According to Lucas van Foreest - 1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.h4", the latest installment in our acclaimed repertoire series, authored by GM Pier Luigi Basso and GM Lucas van Foreest.

Grunfeld for Black - Part 1

The Grünfeld Defense offers Black unparalleled counterplay and winning chances against 1.d4. Yet even experienced players hesitate to adopt it, intimidated by the theoretical jungle that surrounds this razor-sharp opening.
"The Grünfeld always fascinated me, but I was often scared by all the theory," admits GM Baadur Jobava. "Now things are easier with engines, so I asked two dynamic players, IM Dragos Ceres and GM Luca Moroni, to help me build something fresh, fun, and easy to use."

Strategic Repertoire against Grunfeld Defense

Following the success of his first course, Strategical Repertoire Against King's Indian Defense – Part 1, IM Dejan Marjanovic continues building a powerful and practical White repertoire based on the Fianchetto System.
This time, he targets one of Black’s most respected and dynamic defenses — the Grunfeld Defense.
The starting position of the course arises after:
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nf3 Bg7 4.g3 0-0 5.Bg2.
Here, IM Marjanovic covers both the classical Grunfeld move 5...d5 and the solid 5...c6 followed by ...d7-d5 (the Symmetrical Grunfeld).
