From Pawn Structure to Endgame Technique

Three Openings, One Endgame Family

Based on the Strategy Wednesday series "Typical Endgames in London, Torre, and Trompowsky," this course focuses on the endgames arising from three of the most widely played White systems: the London System, the Torre Attack, and the Trompowsky. Although these openings are often treated separately, they share a deeper structural logic: in all three, White commits the queen's bishop early, and the resulting middlegames produce the same family of pawn structures and endgames.

The connection is concrete. The early development of the bishop to f4 or g5 most often produces Carlsbad formations, where the c-pawn for d-pawn exchange defines the long-term character of the position. White plays on the dark squares, and that strategy continues directly into the endgame. Because the same structures recur across all three systems, the same evaluation criteria and technical procedures apply throughout.

What the Course Covers

• Part 1 introduces the Carlsbad-type structures common to all three openings: why certain versions consistently favor one side, how strong players steer the middlegame toward a favorable transition, and how technique, prophylaxis, and accurate piece placement decide positions that look balanced on the surface.
• Part 2 examines the Hedgehog strategy for Black, including typical queenside play and characteristic knight maneuvers to the squares d3 and d6.
• Part 3 turns to Trompowsky endgames after Bxf6, with both exf6 and gxf6 recaptures, and to Torre positions where Black has exchanged White's dark-squared bishop for a knight.
• Part 4 covers symmetrical pawn structures from the Torre after dxe5 or dxc5, queen-exchange lines arising from Qb3–Qb6, and a range of further structures from all three systems.

The Central Idea

Unlike the sharp tactical battles of the Sicilian, the endgames of the London, Torre, and Trompowsky are decided by precise technique applied to small structural edges. These edges do not win automatically. The course addresses exactly that gap, showing how imbalances that are minimal but durable are converted into full points through correct evaluation and accurate play.
